The Kansas Cycling Association held their annual meeting last Saturday night in Lawrence. The feature item on the agenda was the election of board members. Incumbents Curt Shelman, Curtis Martell, Eric Struckhoff and Roger Lomshek were retained. Chris Locke will be new on the board for 2007. A Kansas Cycling Hall of Fame was established, with Steve Tilford inducted as the inagural member. Also, the board approved the results of the 'Omnium' scoring of the combined Time Trial, Road Race and Criterium Championships: "Localcycling.com presents the 2006 KCA Omnium. Titles are awarded to the most consistent finisher in all three state championship road events (RR, TT, CT), and omnium points are awarded according to the scheme 20, 18, 16, 15...1 for 1st-18th place, in ten men's and women's categories and age groups. On Tuesday, I was lucky enough to be invited to attend the American Century quarterly meeting on the plaza. I, like most of the people in attendance, was not there to hear about profit margins and investment strategies. Instead, I was eagerly awaiting the arrival of the man who is the reason I began riding a bike in the first place. Lance Armstrong showed up for a short presentation followed by a question and answer session with those in attendance. He showed up in a suit and tennis shoes which I guessed was due to sore legs from running. This was confirmed when he chose to sit, rather than stand when he walked out. It is not every day you get to see your idol in person; it is an even rarer opportunity when you get the chance to talk to him. Fortunately, I was able to do both.
