Hawk Cross UPDATED PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mark Thomas
Thursday, 27 November 2008

We did a little digging and found the basics for the upcoming cyclocross race in Lawrence on the Day of Infamy: Hawk Cross a.k.a Campus Cross. This should be a cool venue. UPDATE 11/29: Unfortunately we just received word that Hawk Cross has been cancelled.

Better news: Jeremy Haynes dropped by the newsdesk today. The Platte City course is ready to go for tomorrow, Nationals venue is dialed, and his Boss Cross 3 returns to Parkville. PLUS the pending flyers for the final three Series60CX events will be posted in the next few hours; including a fresh new race on New Year's Eve. Yup, that's a Wednesday, but with an afternoon start, so even if you can wangle a half day you can 'cross off the old year with a cyclocross party.

Here's the info on the weekend's KanBikeWalk meeting:

"the state-wide bicycling and pedestrian advocacy
organization, is having their annual meeting on November 22nd in
Topeka,
and anyone interested in advocacy is encouraged to attend.

There is a also a pre-meeting bike ride around the city.

This is a great chance to learn about advocacy efforts in Kansas and to
meet some of the people involved in making Kansas a safer place to
ride,
run, and walk. It's also an opportunity to become involved yourself.

Scott Capstack sends this cool news:

Kansas City Parks and Recreation in partnership with Earth Riders Trails Association (ERTA) will host the grand opening of a planned 16 mile primitive, recreational trail system within Swope Park.  The formal dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled at 10:00am Saturday, November 15 followed immediately by the official opening of the trail.  The celebration is free and open to anyone who wishes to attend.

The first phase of trail, designed and built entirely by volunteer labor is in the historic Camp Lake of the Woods section of Swope Park.   The 1.35 mile trail features many rock outcroppings, spectacular views of the surrounding parkland and two small waterfall sections.  Marci Jones, South Regional Director of KCMO Parks and Recreations, says, “We are so excited to have ERTA in association with Heartland Sports Promotions building such world class hiking and biking trails. The trails will be a real treasure.”

The Swope Park Trail system is managed by Scott Capstack and Craig Stoeltzing, co-owners of Heartland Sports Promotions and ERTA Board of Advisor members, who bring over 22 years of trail design and construction experience to the project.   Since January, 40 volunteers have invested over 600 hours designing and constructing Phase one.  Phase two will commence in December, with 3-4 miles of additional trail scheduled for completion over the next six months.

ERTA maintains and manages over 100 miles of trails throughout the Midwest, working with over 10 Land Managers.  To learn more about how you can volunteer and assist with Swope Park trails or any of the other trail systems in the area, go to http://www.swopetrails.com/ or www.earthriders.org and click on Get Involved!

Event location:

Camp Lake of the Woods

Swope Park

Kansas City, MO

For a map of the trailhead please go to http://www.swopetrails.com/ and click on the Camp Lake of the Woods map (upper right side of page).  Parking is available at multiple locations along Oldham Road.

Tentative plans call for hikers to be the first to venture onto the trails with the riders rolling out around 10:30/11am.

This weekend offers a couple of cool events. Andy Slater sends this: "The KU Cycling Club is excited to host the second Rock Jayhawk Gravel Road Race this Saturday, November 8th. Final course preparation is done and the course is in prime condition! The gravel is packed and fast, while stair-step hill promises to be just as grueling as it ever has been. This race will be a blast regardless of skill or ability and we hope to see everyone at Lyon’s Park come Saturday morning."

Roger Harrison has groomed the Leavenworth High School venue for Sunday's Veteran Cyclocross, part of the DeStad Series. Here's the link to course map and directions.

Dr. Joel Terry, who many of you have seen at local Time Trials and Cyclocross events, is having a ribbon cutting
and other festivities today at his Jet Performance Chiropractic; 4:30 - 6:30 PM.

JUST IN: Sunflower CX Cancelled PDF Print E-mail

Friday, 31 October 2008

This Sunday's scheduled cyclocross is a 'no go':

"Late this week I was informed the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks has put a hold on all special events at Clinton Lake State Park for the rest of the year, and likely into 2009. This affects the cyclo-cross race planned for Sunday. All Special Events (even those held on paved areas but excepting events on the trails) have been put on hold “to allow the park grounds to sufficiently recover from the Wakarusa Festival”.

This left no time to secure a new venue before Sunday November 2. I immediately approached the Army Corps of Engineers and another local promoter to make secondary arrangements as I have everything I need for a race, but no venue and now no date. I’m optimistic the race resources will be used at another venue on another date in 2008 but there will not be a race at Clinton Lake State Park this weekend.

People on Paseo PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mark Thomas
Wednesday, 22 October 2008
The localcycling newsdesk received this info on the Paseo Bridge pledge drive from Laurie Chipman:
"Do you ever go to other cities like Portland, OR; Seattle or Chicago and wonder, "Why can't we have bike lanes, bike parking and respect from drivers?" or "Their running/walking events get lots of attention and participation. Why not KC?" Those cities have strong advocacy organizations and broad community support.

Let's Go KC is a small advocacy organization but the Paseo Bridge is the issue that we can use to show local officials that we want the great walking, running and cycling environments that we see in other cities. The Paseo could be our turning point.

"This weekend we decided on a goal of $100,000 by November 24, 2008. That sounds like a lot but if you help us, we can meet that goal because to meet our goal we need 5000 people to pledge only $20! And, we need to pledge because if we don't, MoDOT will definitely not build the walking and bicycling trail until 2031, 20 years from now!
We are off to a great start! In 2 weeks we have received almost $10,500 in pledges from 149 people!
• As a community concerned about active living, we will get the attention of the media, local officials, MoDOT and KDOT.

• We will have clout and local officials will listen to us.

• City, state and federal funds will be allocated for amenities such as trails, bicycle lanes/parking, transit access and walkable neighborhoods.

Here's how you can help.

2. Please send this e-mail to your co-workers, friends, family, and neighbors so they can join with us to pledge for better cycling, walking and running in the KC region, for us and for our children.

No cash is needed now. The money will be collected only if needed to build the ramps to the bicycle/pedestrian trail on the bridge."
