Commuting by Bicycle
High gas prices have increased public transit ridership all across the nation. And as more people move out of their private vehicles as gasoline hits $4 a gallon, some are choosing to put their bodies to the test…and use pedal power.

Commuting by bicycle is no longer limited to the passionate few who don bright-colored spandex and take their seat on a recumbent bike. It’s increasing in popularity among daily commuters – those who bike to work, on errands, or to catch a show.

Unfortunately, some drivers are still unaware of the size advantage their multi-ton vehicles have over their two-wheeled human-powered neighbors, and some bicyclists don’t respect the rules of the road as they’re required to.

Today Steve Kraske welcomes guests – including those who commute to work by bicycle each day – to discuss why they choose to bike to work and the store, the routes they take, and how their average speed often equals that of commuters in their cars. Sure – one may arrive a few minutes ahead of the other – but who just got the good workout and didn’t spend a dime on gas?

Rock and Mercy.

Several area riders were in Austin over the weekend, including the 'on fire' Kelly Benjamin. Bill Marshall commented to the localcycling news team: "Holy cow it was hard!" Bill's squad of Mercy riders made up of mostly regional athletes came out quite well against the powerhouse national squad of Rock Racing. Here's the link to cycling news coverage:

From time to time we recieve editorial letters and comments regarding stories and other editorial letters and comments. On occasion we publish whole or part if there's a hot topic. Recently there was a lot of buzz regarding timely results for area races. The KCA published a response at their site here, and we've chosen to publish a rebuttal to the example letter we published from a local racer concerned about the issue. Truman's Big Love

Truman’s Big Love, this Sunday June 22nd ww.w.hearlandrace.com

Join us this Sunday for the annual running of Truman’s Big Love at Landahl Park, in Independence, MO. The course conditions will be in rockin shape by Friday, as the forecast is calling for awesome weather. We are working on getting the course prepped and beautifully groomed for the racing this weekend.

Monday Night Movement

We're very impressed at the number of rides popping up aroung the metro. Monday offers what we at localcycling.com have been calling a 'recovery' ride for several years. It's a great night for a social ride that backs off the speed and distance (provided you've done hard/long or both over the weekend). It's also a great opportunity to mentor folks new to group rides. Check out KCBike.info's listing of these rides here. With fresh locations at Epic Bike and Sport north of the river and at Family Bicycles in Waldo, you're likely to find one within riding distance of where you live.

Where Are the Results?

A number of readers have asked us about the results for the USAC Kansas Category Championships (Criterium and Road Race) held in Pittsburg, but we haven't seen 'em. We've been watching the KCA site for those and this weekend's Masters Champs.

One reader comments: "Directors of the Kansas Cycling Association: Any particular reason we are one week out from the *championship* event and without results? It really doesn't take much in this day and age, technically speaking. Record, type, forward. It does take commitment, however. Clearly there is a lack of one or the other as we are, again, without results. Please remedy on behalf of the racers, observers, and community of Quality."
