From Michael Prata, local organizer: "On the same day as the Ride of Silence, May 17, the Lance Armstrong Foundation will be sponsoring LIVESTRONG DAY as well. LIVESTRONG DAY is to celebrate those cancer survivors and to acknowledge that “in the battle with cancer, unity is strength, knowledge is power and attitude is everything.”
Booths and refreshments will be set up at the Cancer Survivors Park at 48th and Roanoke from 4 -9 p.m. It is hoped that the Ride of Silence will make a stop for refreshments during the course of the ride." |

No, it's not in Flanders and really doesn't have any cobbles, but it's a fun event with several distance options. In Texas they call these non-race events "rallys", but don't let that fool you into thinking some folks won't go fast. Flyer. |

A friend pointed out that today is affectionately known as 'bicycle day' among some folks. Drop the Sgt. Pepper or Jefferson Airplane Greatest Hits CD in and read about psychedelic cycling. |

Here's a press release from the GP folks on the upcoming Stage Race. Stage Races are always an epic event to put on in our neck of the woods, these folks deserve some props.
(Lawrence, KS) – Team GP VeloTek, a Kansas City-area bicycle racing team, and Revolution Racing, are sponsoring the 3rd annual VeloTek Grand Prix on Saturday and Sunday, April 29 and 30, 2006 in Lawrence, KS. A Lance Armstrong Junior Olympic Race Series (LAJORS) event, all junior cyclists race free. With over $6000 in total prizes, this is the largest USCF Category 3 payout in the Midwest at $400 for first place.
The VeloTek Grand Prix features a short prologue time trial and a challenging criterium race on Saturday at Clinton State Park on Saturday morning. The road race takes place around Perry Lake, north of Lawrence, Sunday morning. Striving to increase participation in bicycle racing, the VeloTek Grand Prix focuses on the beginning and intermediate USCF categories (5, 4, and 3) and features the largest cash payout for a Category 3 race in the Midwest. There is also a $300 payout to the top General Classification Category 3 teams.
Bicycle racing in the Midwest continues to grow through local races like the VeloTek Grand Prix. “By placing emphasis on the beginning and intermediate levels of cycling, we’re growing the sport from the bottom up,” Team Director Jim Whittaker says of his LAJOR-sponsored race. “Junior cyclists have the opportunity to compare themselves against other young racers in the series.” To increase participation by adult beginners, Whittaker announced that there would be a new category added to the race this year. Masters 35+ Open Category will allow any category of rider above the age of 35 to compete as a group.
Information and race flyers can be found online at www.revolution-racing.com or by emailing the team at

Doug Plumer at Crowder. Image courtesy of Kim Morris. www.kimmorris.com Chris Hess sends word that Tuesday night at the training crit the "B" folks will begin at 7:10 p.m. and not 7:00 p.m. Chris also has a new project for Elite road and multisport athletes: Neet. The Heartland Race Series results from Crowder should be up at their site soon. We found the results for Spring Fling 6 at the KCA site (but filed under the wrong date). Jim Whittaker says series results and Stage Race Flyer soon. |
