 Juniors listening intently From Joseph Schmalz "GP Velotek held its 2 nd Annual Banquet and Silent Auction Saturday night, January 28 th, at the Peeper Ranch in Lenexa. Proceeds from the event will benefit the juniors trip to the 2006 USCF Nationals in Seven Springs, Pennsylvania this July. The evening began with guests mingling and talking about recent cycling news while browsing and bidding on the silent auction items donated by various local supporters. Dinner and dessert was then served, and Jim Whittaker, president of GP Velotek, gave a short presentation to thank the team’s sponsors and present the 2005 GP Velotek Junior Awards. Recipients of the awards were Jessie Rieck, Most Improved Junior Woman and Greg Payne, Most Improved Male Junior; Joseph Schmalz for Service, Austin Fick for Leadership, John Funk for Excellence, Garrick Valverde for Teamwork, John Shipman for Development, and Greg Payne was awarded the 5 Spoke award for his performance in all five areas during the 2005 cycling season. Guest speaker, Ben Jacques-Maynes, from Santa Cruz, California, a professional cyclist currently riding for Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada Pro Cycling Team, then captured the attention of the guests for the next 30 minutes while he talked about his experiences as a junior cyclist and how his career evolved. Ben outlined the four components that he feels are key to being a successful cyclist: Motivation, Planning, Training, and Teamwork. Ben then answered questions from the audience and the banquet concluded." |

Kansas City, MO -- Steve Tilford will serve as Rider Manager for the
new "Midwest TREK-Volkswagen" team, which will make it's debut this
season. The U.S. Cyclo-cross National Champion and 5-time mountain bike
world champion brings over 20 years of racing and team management
experience to a seven rider squad, which includes Bill Stolte (Topeka,
KS), Shadd Smith (Shawnee Mission, KS), Adam Mills (Lawrence, KS), Tony
Wilhelm (Kansas City, KS), junior rider Peter Boyd (Omaha, NE) and
Megan Hottman (Mission, KS). In addition, the Midwest
TREK/Volkswagen squad is seeking another Category 2 rider to round out the roster. |

No Jerseys. No Medals. No Worries. Teresa Jarzemkoski finished with the
best numerical placing in her class with 8th place, Dean Parker was
18th and Mark Thomas placed 41st against a tough international field.
All three report that the beer is above average (ja!). Stay tuned for
tall tales and photos to contradict them. |

Française des Jeux riders Baden Cooke and Jimmy Casper are the main protagonists of "Wired to Win: Surviving the Tour de France," an IMAX film scheduled to play in Kansas City's Union Station IMAX Theater. The Sunflower to Roses folks will host a showing and party on February 9th. Sean Jackson of STR invites the cycling community to come down enjoy some food, wine, company and a post showing guest speaker. The 45-minute film, produced by Partners HealthCare, was shot during the 2003 Tour de France and focuses on the interaction of the human brain with the body in extremely strenuous circumstances.
