Tough sand run.
Day one of Cowtown Cycling's Riverfest was contested in moderate Fall temperatures. The course had enough technical features that riders needed to stay focused or they found themselves gapped or crashed. Most races had plenty of spills on the dry grass corners. But mixed in with the technical was plenty of fast pavement and long grass straights. Nebraska promoter John Lefler and Roger Harrison shared the mic to call the race. Bruce Edwards caught some of the action in his fine photos. Great racing, great food, a very good time. Click on the 'Read More' below to see full results. More racing tomorrow (click on the calendar link on the left side of the page for more details.)

Race director Chris Locke has sent a nice course map for this weekend's Riverside Cyclocross Festival. The course features all natural runs (and believe me most everyone will be running) rather than boards. Locke also notes that Antonio's Pizza, a shop that delivers by bicycle, will be feeding the crowd on Saturday. Expect a wide range of goodies including Chili on Sunday. Click on the date (Nov 4th and 5th) of our calendar to view the flyer. If you click on the year (2006) you get a full listing of area events, including the flyers and links for Sunflower Cross, Veteren's Cross, KLM UCI, Missouri and Kansas State Championships.

Steve Tilford going hard. Photo by Jane Edwards
The Boulvevard Cup Cyclocross Race demonstrated why the Wyandotte County Park Venue has been selected for the 2007 and 2008 USCF Nationals. Course designer Gregg Rupp created a fast and painful 2 mile circuit with rollers and selectively placed forced dismounts. The crowds found the set of doubles next to the Boulvevard Beer tent a popular place to watch. There was plenty of excited cheering, cowbells and other noise makers to urge the riders on. Multiple National and World Champ Steve Tilford led the Men's 1/2/3 race from the gun. Jelly Belly pro rider Brian Jensen, made one of his occasional appearances as a veldrijder. Tilford's high tempo from the first lap left only Shadd Smith and Jensen in possible contention.  However, throughout the race the gap only increased. Jensen's road legs did allow him to pull away for 2nd on the final lap. Former Barrel Racer, Sydney Brown bested the women's 1/2/3 field, with Michelle Jensen (Brian's wife) taking second. All fields had first class competition with racers from around the region. Hard working Roger Harrison brought the equipment to mark and set up the course. Director Mike Berning and his volunteers kept things smooth. The KCA computer timing produced fast results. Jane Edwards caught some of the action: Photos.
