Chris Locke and Mark Thomas have been hard at
designing a challenging course for 2006's first local race: The GP
Shawnee Cyclocross. Click here for the race flyer. Click here
to register. The event will be held in Herman Laird Park next to Old
Shawnee Town on Johnson Drive.. This park has been a favorite training
spot for several 'cross fanatics, including two time USCF National
Championship Silver medalist Dean Parker. One of the attractive
features is the ability to train under lights for evening workouts. The
metro cyclocross scene has shown substantial growth the last few
years with a race schedule running from October until early January.
Like most area 'cross races this event offers beginner through elite
categories, nice awards, and a party atmosphere both during and post
event. Mr, Locke and Mr. Thomas have both promoted a number of area
cyclocross races in Kansas City, Lenexa, Overland Park, Parkville, and
Riverside. This will be the first cyclocross race in Shawnee. The
Kansas City area was host to the National Championships in 2000 and
will see their return in 2007 and 2008. See the official website for details. |

Sketchy, muddy, icy, rutted. Those words and more describe the course on the final
day of competition in Providence, R.I. Catherine Walberg (15th) and Jen Tilley (36th) both rode quite
well in the Women's Elite event despite the challenging conditions. Also contested at the same venue was the
Liberty Invitational, featuring cyclocross racers from nearly every
previously contested National Championshiop category. The event was won
by freshly crowned Elite champ Todd Wells. Steve Tilford placed 10th
and Tony Wilhelm came in at 23rd. |

Brad Cole won the younger of the two "Killer B" races at USCF
Cyclocross Nationals. Our on site reporter says Brad had over a minute
on the next finisher at the line. Dean Parker managed 18th in the
50-54's after a pair of nasty crashes including one that Dean said,
"Really rung my bell." |

In a bit of Deja Vu, our local racers in Rhode Island experienced
blizzard conditions at the USCF Cyclocross National Championship
similar to the Overland Park Nationals of 2000 (See the photo a few
stories down with one of our staff playing in the snow). Despite (or
maybe because of) those conditions a couple of area riders made it to
the podium. The weather did force the promoters to move the schedule
around a bit, but the Mens Elite race goes off as planned at 3 P.M. Eastern Time.
You can hear coverage beginning at 2:30 P.M. on live internet radio here.
Cyclingnews.com has some nice shots of the action featuring Steve Tilford and Catherine Walberg. |
