Keith Walberg sends this report: All five travelers in the "Tilford Van" competed in yesterdays "Jingle Cross Rock" cyclocross races in Iowa City and all five finished "in the money" with good results. The headline for the Topeka crew was Steve Tilford's solo victory in the Elite men's race. Tilford finshed more than two minutes ahead of Discovery rider Jason McCartney and team mate. Shad Smith. In the women'e elite race Catherine Walberg finshed a close second to Minnesota's Linda Sone. Other strong finishes among van mates include Bill Stolte winning the masters 30+ race, Keith Walberg's 4th place in men's B, and Trudi Rebsamen's 6th in the elite women's event. It was a fun and fast course with 90% of the race on Iowa University's nicely manicured cross country running park. Photo by Keith Walberg |

Racers planning on the Men's Elite event at this Saturday's KLM
UCI Cyclocross will need an International License. These may be
purchased on line at USA Cycling
or at the two registration/packet pickups at the Trek Bicycle Store of
Kansas City on Wednesday and Friday. An International license purchased
either way is good until the end of 2006, and covers UCI, USCF and
NORBA all in one. Packet pickup details here.
Those
choosing to race Elite this weekend will get to bump handlebars with
Matt Kelly, the first American to win a Gold Medal at a Cyclocross
World Championship and local fave and multiple National Cyclcross
Champion, Steve Tilford. Since this is crunch time for tuning up for
nationals on December 10th, it's expected that Elite racers from
Colorado, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas as well as our
regional hot rods from Kansas and Missouri will be on the start at
Wyandotte County Park. |

Even with last minute venue change, Jeremy Haynes was able to put together an outstanding course utilizing a variety of challenging park features. Sand pit, stairs, double boards, and a grunting 'ride up' kept heart rates high. Come back performance of the day belonged to Tony Wilhelm who broke a chain as the gun went off. Tony was given a fresh bike, but still started well behind the A field. By the end of the race he'd moved into 5th. .Boss Cross Results. |

Sven Nys might be busy, but this is what a UCI race looks like. Photo by Mark Thomas With less than one week to go before the KLM UCI Cyclocross and the combined Kansas and Missouri Cyclocross State Championships to be held at Wyandotte County Park near the Kansas Speedway, nervous local riders are watching the weather forecast. A possibility of rain and snow mixtures next week could turn the current fast grass course with wicked runs into a Low Country mud fest. The wide open venue will be a delight for spectators even if the weather gets heavy. The KLM folks will place a large tent with a view of most of the course to shelter the enthusiastic audience. Of course, with beer provided by the promoters, the spectators should be extra enthusiastic. The circus is in town!

The Major Taylor Foundation was the focus of a wonderful interview on KCUR's KC Currents program. The segment, titled Spinning across Kansas City allowed Delores Jones to interview Kenneth Walker and several of the kids (and adults) who ride with him on Saturday mornings.
