Brad Cole won the younger of the two "Killer B" races at USCF
Cyclocross Nationals. Our on site reporter says Brad had over a minute
on the next finisher at the line. Dean Parker managed 18th in the
50-54's after a pair of nasty crashes including one that Dean said,
"Really rung my bell." |

In a bit of Deja Vu, our local racers in Rhode Island experienced
blizzard conditions at the USCF Cyclocross National Championship
similar to the Overland Park Nationals of 2000 (See the photo a few
stories down with one of our staff playing in the snow). Despite (or
maybe because of) those conditions a couple of area riders made it to
the podium. The weather did force the promoters to move the schedule
around a bit, but the Mens Elite race goes off as planned at 3 P.M. Eastern Time.
You can hear coverage beginning at 2:30 P.M. on live internet radio here.
Cyclingnews.com has some nice shots of the action featuring Steve Tilford and Catherine Walberg. |

Steve Tilford (Verge/Shimano) climbed to the top spot on the Men's Masters 45-49 Podium at the U.S. Cyclocross National Championship in Providence, Rhode Island. His nearest competitor finished more than two minutes later. Dale Knapp, who raced Steve closely in similar snowy conditions at Stoll Park, in Overland Park Kansas at the 2000 Nationals and SuperCup weekend topped the Men's 40 - 44 podium. Watch for Tilford to race well again in the Elite field tomorrow, as well as in the Liberty Cup on Sunday.
Catherine Walberg (Team Kenda Tire) also earned a podium spot, finishing fourth in the Women's Masters 40 - 44 Race. Catherine will also contest the elite race, joined by local teammate Jennifer Tilley.
The rest of the Kansas City delegation didn't fare as well today. Brian Williams crossed the line in 56th place in the Men's 40-44 race, and Bill Anderson was 65th in the Men's 45-49 field. Bill Marshall and Trudi Rebsamen were unable to finish their races, nor was Maryann Martinez, who traveled with the Slimen und Grossen News Team from Mol, Belgium to the World Cup Race in Hoogerheide, Netherlands last January.
Expect more podium finishes in the days to come.

Will it look like this on January 8th? Quite a few area riders have headed off to the Cyclocross National Championship this weekend in Rhode Island. The local weather is reminescent of the 2000 Overland Park 'Cross Nationals. But the season isn't over! Shawnee will host a cyclocross race at a fresh venue on January 8th, 2006. Promoters Mark Thomas and Chris Locke are pleased to have the City of Shawnee's assistance in developing a 'village' style setting for the event. "Shawnee is the sister city of Pittem, Belgium and is proud of it's Belgian heritage, so a 'cross race is a great fit," says Thomas. Mr. Locke, after consulting area racers has added a single speed class, and notes, "This venue is perfect for the hard core or first time rider. We've got a heated building to thaw out in after races, lots of food, beer and fun!" You can register online at: www.velosource.com

This from Brent Hugh: "Bicyclists,
I hope you will plan to join us for a memorial ride Sunday December 11th for
Robert Osborn, the bicyclist who was so senselessly murdered recently.
Although I didn't know Robert, he lived just about 1/2 mile from my home and
rode many of the same routes I and my family ride daily and weekly. So this
really hit home for me.
Robert was an avid transportational cyclist. He owned three bicycles, usually
commuted to work on his bicycle, and rode all over the metropolitan area.
In short, he was one of us."

Tilford makes it double Steve Tilford and Catherine Walberg repeated finishing top of the podium at day two of the weekend's cyclocross racing at Wyandotte County Park. Sunday's event was the combined championship for Kansas and Missouri. Riders from both states and around the region contested in the frigid weather. Since day two was held under USCF rules, an extra board found it's way into "Hooligan Alley". The surprise addition, to what had been a challenging set of doubles, tripped up several riders. Nearly as treacherous were the acorns that crashed the bare naked streaker who jumped onto the course during the Mens Elite event. The wintery conditions kept the free beer extra cold and the spectators extra enthusiastic. The KLM folks will be bringing back UCI racing again next year in preparation for the 2007 and 2008 USCF Cyclcross National Championships to be held in Kansas City. |
