We had a major computer SNAFU with the KCA registration computers after
the Pittsburg races. That should be completely resolved and results
posted by Tuesday night at kscycling.org. The KCA has lead the way with
Curtis Martel's groundbreaking software in posting timely results and we
failed to maintain that standard this time. We are doing everything
possible to ensure the problems will not be repeated. As promoter and

2) KS Category Time Trial

In previous time trials all riders of a given category started around
each other and a number of racers have asked why we are running things
differently this year.

The biggest reason is that it benefits pre-registered riders by giving
them their start times well before the race starts. In the case of our
race start times will be posted Friday night at

pre-registered riders can plan their breakfast, arrival and warm-up
ahead of time. In years past no exact start times have been published
until 30 minutes before the start leaving racers only a general idea of
when they start beforehand (between 9:00 & 9:30 AM for example).

We chose a 9 AM start time to allow riders driving time without
requiring a 4 AM wake up while still avoiding the heat of the day. Based
on previous years turnout we should be done racing and have results
posted by 11:30 AM or about 15 minutes after the last rider finishes. An
awards ceremony will follow as soon as the legal protest period expires.

One other complaint we have heard is that you will not be surrounded by
racers in your category which may affect your race strategy. My only
response is a time trial has no strategy other than pedal fast! If you
are basing your effort on anything besides whether you can keep the bile
down for a few more minutes you are not doing it right. Just because the
person ahead or behind you is in your category does not mean they are a
good rabbit for you to chase. For all you know they've been off the bike
for a three week eating binge at McDonald's and are just recovering or
they could have been motor-pacing daily while dosing up on epo & hgh.

For racer comfort we are having registration and the award ceremony in
St. Patrick's air conditioned Church Hall where both breakfast and lunch
will be served to take the edge off that post race hunger while the last
riders finish. Any donation to the Church foundation buys you a meal.
Lunch will include pasta and burgers and vegetarian friendly chow.

The "L" shaped course is not board flat but all "climbs" are
big-ringable and none is longer than a few hundred meters. Desolate
roads and a heavy police presence will keep vehicular shenanigans to a
minimum.

3) Category RR & Crit report

Slow as pond water results posting online was an issue
for the KS state championship races around Pittsburg June 7th & 8th.
Results were at least posted quickly on paper thanks to great officials
at the races and cash & medals were handed out like it was a lotto
winners convention. Results posted in this report are as the promoter
remembers it since nothing has been posted online yet. Any errors or
omissions are purely the fault of his failing memory. Consult the
(eventually) posted results for all placings.

A punishing Saturday wind that never dropped below 25 and frequently hit
35 made drafting a dicey proposition and made sure every mile was
earned. Total cash prizes handed out was just shy of $1800 on Saturday.

Craig Henwood of SKC racing took home the gold in both days Category 4
men's races. Here he raises a fist in celebration after winning the
Saturday 90K road race ahead of a nearly 40 rider field.

The Cat 4 men started fast and never backed down setting a pace that saw
them eat up the cat 3's five minute head start in the first few miles
and rapidly leave the 3's behind. Here are the 4's rolling off the start
line ready to race.

With temperatures in the high 80's road race participants enjoyed a

The Cat 1/2 men had a minuscule 8 rider field but Bill Marshall (Mercy
Cycling) made sure it wasn't just another mileage day. Marshall launched
an attack on the first of 6 laps of the 22K course and set a pace that
brutalized himself and the field at times riding well out of sight of
the pursuit on the wide open stretches of the course with a lead
approaching 3 minutes. He later said he spent 85 minutes at LT and an
additional 75 minutes at his AT during the solo break before being
caught in the final laps. A flat tire during Marshall's break was kept
from tragic status by one of two wheel vehicles following the Cat 1/2
races. Every race had at least one wheel vehicle providing support.

The only downer during the road race was a very bad railroad crossing.
The promoter had a crew covering the crossing with plywood and removing
it anytime a train approached which apparently wasn't good enough for
KCS. After the women and cat 5's finished the plywood was ordered
permanently removed by railroad officials and Craig Sparks promptly went
down hard on the first lap of the Cat 4 men's race. The promoter was
heard vowing to cover the crossing with quick-crete for next year's
races if the railroad did not do a proper repair.

Sunday's criterium saw temps in the mid 90's and steady wind approaching
40 mph during a long day of racing on the PSU campus. Wind speed was so
severe that the start finish banner came down before the first race even
began after the steel poles began buckling. Between high heat,
incredible wind and the ever present technical backstretch racers were
pushed to their limits.

Jay Hawkins added yet another State Championship title to his resume
after a hard fought Cat 3 men's race. Hawkins celebrates his victory as
he crosses the line well in front of the field

and grabs all the sugar he can from the podium girls after claiming his
gold and cash.

Besides almost $1800 in cash prizes about $300 in cash primes was doled
out during Sunday's race to keep riders pushing the pace. Both day's
races featured air conditioned registration, showers and indoor
bathrooms for racer comfort plus food for sale on-site. Tons of photos
